Elements to Cover When Writing a Website Review

  • Website Address (URL) - How can people find the site?
  • Design & Organization - The first thing that you see when looking at a website is its design. Is the design pleasing to the eye? Is the site cluttered, hard to read, or difficult to navigate? Are there any glaring design flaws or glitches, or is the site a work of art?  How well is information organized?  It is clear where you should click to find each piece of information?
  • Purpose - What is the purpose of the site? What information, product or service does it offer? If you can’t figure it out, then the author is doing something wrong. Purpose should be apparent without hunting around too much. Is this site the only one of its kind? If not, is there anything about it that makes it special?
  • Content - The most obvious element to cover in your review is the site’s content. Does the content of the site match its purpose? If not, there is a problem! Is the content easily readable? Does it make sense? What are some of the highlights? Is there a page, article or section of the site that really stands out as being fantastic?
  • Grammar and Punctuation - Does the site use proper grammatical elements? Are there spelling mistakes and punctuation errors all over the place?
  • Effectiveness - Overall, do you find that the site is effective in doing what it says it does? Are there other sites that do a better or equal job?
  • Website Audience - What group of people is this site made for? What age group? Would someone not of this group or age find the site confusing?  Is there anything parents should know about this site before letting their children view it?
  • Info about the author - Is the author a person, organization, or company? Is the author an expert or do they have no idea what they are talking about? Do they have any qualifications to write what they are writing?

Structure for Writing your Review:

Part I - Web address (URL), what kind of site it is (purpose), who created it, what is the audience (including age range), do you have to register

Part II - Design of website - Is it easy or hard to find info & why? Does front page contain mostly text, mostly pictures or a combination of both? Is it cluttered or plain? Can you easily get to different pages on the site?

Part III - Content - What type of info can you find here, why is it special, what is your favorite thing on the site and why, what can the info here be used for, are there ads and/or can you order things from the site, any drawbacks.

Proof-reading for Classmates

Read the essay thoroughly and carefully.  Watch for and think about:

     -Spelling errors

     -Complete sentences

-Do paragraphs flow? Are they logical?

-Did summary cover required topics of how cards were made (materials, programs),

how difficult it was, problems encountered?

-Did writer compare and contrast the two methods?  Did he/she list 2 pros and 2 cons

for each method? State which method took more time and why?  State her/his preferred method and why?

Create a comment for the writer bases on your proofreading.  Be sure your comments are RESPECTFUL and HELPFUL.  If you like something about the writing, say why you like it.  Be gentle when pointing our errors!
